Sketch Night

Hey all. Here's something a little different then usual (I keep saying that don't I?). I decided to play around with type a bit more so I did a quick illustration to use as a background. It's Lavinia from Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus. She sort of gets the bad end of that deal I'm afraid.

This is after it went through the final Photoshop process, which I was not thoughtful enough to document. Oh well, maybe next time.

It feels vaguely summer-y to me which is good because it's really cold out today in the True North Strong and Free.

Tidal Patterns

This month's theme was patterns. I chose the tidal patterns of the ocean that are governed by the moon. I've been spending far too much time in the First People's gallery at the ROM for my own good.

Hi all!

This is an older piece that I made for my printmaking class last spring. I only just dug this up out from under the clutter. The bits in the corner are a left over screen print that was already on the paper the rest is a softolium block that was about an inch wide and two inches tall.

I have a deal with myself to do a drawing/sketch a day based on a word I choose from the dictionary at random. Yesterday's word was Phantasm. So because I had some extra time, I did a quick painting. This took about an hour. It has structural issues, but it's growing on me.

Cicadas/ IF Atmosphere

Hi all, I am back in the country again! I drew these cicadas in the south of France while staying in Teyran. They definitely created quite an atmosphere with their mating calls. It was really, really loud at all times of the day. This was done from sketch to matrix to first artist's proof in about an hour and a half. I just reprinted it today which took about 20 minutes for a varied edition of 15.

Lungs/ Grad show

Hi, I figured I should upload a bit more of my thesis work to this blog, at least the pieces that aren't exclusive to my portfolio website :) which you can find at http://www.thepenciltrail.com

The Lungs were thought to be moist and cool in contrast with the heart's innate heat. They were also responsible for respiring the pnuema (spirit) from the air. It has also long been notes that the lungs/throat were the source of speech.

Grad Show!

The spleen was once believed to be the source of black bile, It was supposed to cause a whole range of emotions, specifically melancholy. It was also believed that if you removed the spleen you would run faster.
